Thank you, Jim.

We have just purchased nearly $40K worth of vouchers for Raramuri to use in groceries scattered throughout the Sierra Madre. We will not be providing additional food aid this season, but look forward to sponsoring exclusively Raramuri gatherings, which will feature only traditional footraces, early this Spring. For this, we fund food, transportation, awards, and other necessities. I have just heard from one of the organizers that he hopes we will continue to seek funds for this event and others like them. If your class would like to work on this, I encourage them to look at our site, to read the sections about traditional running and the Cuiteco event we sponsored in 2010 and 2011.

With regard to the book you are reading, your class might be interested in the author's recent endorsement of Norawas:
http://www.chrismcdougall.com/blog/2012/02/the-white-horse-rides-to-the-rescue/

Please let me know if I can help in any way. I certainly would love to know more about your class!

Very sincerely,

Deborah Hirsch
Treasurer, Norawas de Raramuri

I read about the famine in today's paper and shared this link with my on-line training community in Sweden. If we all contribute only a few dollars each we can help many Rarámuri with food. Korima, is that the word? My thoughts are with the running people.

Long before any anthropologist recorded they were conducting these races. These races have evolved from other forms over the past centuries. Running was not unique to the Tarahumara, and at least the rarajípari was adapted through contact with other indigena cultures. The matachines and pascol dances were introduced by the Jesuit missionaries. But, upon their expulsion from the New World in the late 18th century, the Tarahumara changed many aspects of these dances.
