Maize Urgently Needed
This is when your contributions are most urgently needed. Exactly now.
The worst drought in years has descended on the people of the Copper Canyon, The Sierra Tarahumara.
Hunger has become severe.
Norawas has been responding to the hunger since December.
With funds primarily raised through Micah True’s speaking tour, we have been distributing food vouchers in the Sierra Tarahumara. The vouchers are redeemable at groceries throughout the area. US citizens and anyone living outside of Mexico can make a tax-deductible contribution that will buy vouchers given directly to Tarahumara communities, families, and individuals in need.
Thank you for your help!

I teach college English and we are reading Born to Run in a few of my classes. We would like to do something to help. Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you. Jim
Thank you, Jim.
We have just purchased nearly $40K worth of vouchers for Raramuri to use in groceries scattered throughout the Sierra Madre. We will not be providing additional food aid this season, but look forward to sponsoring exclusively Raramuri gatherings, which will feature only traditional footraces, early this Spring. For this, we fund food, transportation, awards, and other necessities. I have just heard from one of the organizers that he hopes we will continue to seek funds for this event and others like them. If your class would like to work on this, I encourage them to look at our site, to read the sections about traditional running and the Cuiteco event we sponsored in 2010 and 2011.
With regard to the book you are reading, your class might be interested in the author’s recent endorsement of Norawas:

Please let me know if I can help in any way. I certainly would love to know more about your class!
Very sincerely,
Deborah Hirsch
Treasurer, Norawas de Raramuri
I read about the famine in today’s paper and shared this link with my on-line training community in Sweden. If we all contribute only a few dollars each we can help many Rarámuri with food. Korima, is that the word? My thoughts are with the running people.
